The field seeking to succeed former City Councilman Todd Apo is set, with 14 candidates running for the District 1 seat representing Leeward Coast-Ewa.

Five more candidates filed by yesterday’s 4:30 p.m. deadline.

Those candidates include former Republican lieutenant governor candidate Kioni Dudley, Jason T. Espero, James K. Manaku, Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board Chairwoman Patty Kahanamoku Teruya and Victoria (Cissy) Yuen.

Espero is the son of state Sen. Will Espero (D, Ewa-Honouliuli-Ewa Beach).

They join early filers former state Rep. Bob McDermott; Mel Kahele of Local 625 of the Ironworkers Union; and Matthew LoPresti, a Hawaii Pacific University assistant professor of philosophy and humanities.

Also in the race are Tom Berg, Celeste (Lacaden) Lacuesta, Chris Lewis, Rose Martinez, John P. Roco and Gary Kahinano Velleses.

Berg and Lacuesta ran unsuccessfully for state House and Senate offices, respectively, this year. Roco lost in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

Apo resigned Nov. 8 to take a job with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Hawaii.

The voter registration deadline to participate in the all-mail special election is Nov. 29. Voting concludes Dec. 29, when results are to be announced.
