The U.S. Coast Guard joined with the Royal New Zealand Air Force yesterday to rescue a family of four that had gone missing for six days in waters 2,300 miles south of Hawaii.

The Coast Guard was first contacted last Thursday by the Kiribati Maritime Police Branch, which informed them of a missing 13-foot boat with two adults and two children aboard. The Coast Guard cutter Rush was dispatched to the area and initiated a search using its HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter.

The New Zealand Air Force finally located the missing boat yesterday approximately 230 miles from Butaritari Atoll. The crew of the Rush launched a small boat to pick up the family for transport to Butaritari Atoll.

According to the Coast Guard, the family suffered dehydration but was not otherwise injured. They were given food and water by the rescue crew.

There was no immediate information on the family’s home town.
