Brushfire chars 130 acres on Big Island

Light showers and overcast skies are aiding firefighters today working to extinguish a brush fire that damaged three structures in Waimea on the Big Island.

The fire continues to smolder within the 130-acre area that burned yesterday near the Kanehoa subdivision along Mamalahoa Highway, fire fighters said.

Firefighters on the south side of the blaze are using pumps and handlines today to extinguish hot spots.

The runaway fire started along the highway about 12:30 p.m. yesterday  and came close to several homes on large lots but  damaged only two sheds and a 100-square-foot structure, firefighters said.

No homes were damaged and no one was injured. The cause is under investigation.
