Hawaii County firefighters rescued a 43-year-old hiker lost high on the slopes of Mauna Kea on the Big Island.

Firefighters said the man was hiking alone on Mauna Kea Access Road above the Hale Pohaku visitor center when darkness fell last night.

The man called firefighters and reported he was lost and unable to make it down the trail. Rescue crews called the man on his cell phone and determined his location, just off the road at about the 9,000 foot elevation., firefighters said.

Rescuers reached him about two miles away from Hale Pohaku.

Mauna Kea is home to some of the world’s best telescopes near its 13,796 foot summit.
