Cash-crunched temple raises $41,762
Jikoen Hongwanji Mission, facing a $75,000 budget shortfall, raised more than $41,000 at a concert Sunday at the Okinawan temple in Kalihi.
"With a goal of $20,000, we made $41,762," fundraising Chairman Pieper Toyama said. "And we still have a few more checks to deposit. We more than doubled our goal thanks to the community’s profound wish to see the spirit of Jikoen thrive."
Enrollment at the Lumbini Hongwanji Preschool, a major source of the temple’s revenue, dropped markedly this year as the result of cuts in state childcare tuition subsidies.
Another fundraiser for the temple, the Semi-Annual BBQ Chicken Sale, will take place next Saturday at Jikoen from 8 a.m. to noon. The temple is at 1731 N. School St. Call 845-3422 or visit www.jikoenhongwanji.org.
