Firefighters have contained the 300-acre brush fire at the U.S. Army’s Makua Military Reservation and are keeping watch for flare-ups overnight.

The fire, which broke out yesterday around 2 p.m. roughly a quarter-mile north of the Makua reservation entry gate off Farrington Highway, has blackened a one-mile area along the northern ridgeline.

Fifty firefighters, including personnel from the Honolulu Fire Department, the Federal Fire Department, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Army, battled the blaze throughout the day. Five helicopters were also deployed.

Dennis Drake, director of public affairs for the U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, said a few hot spots remain but the fire is expected to die down and winds subside and humidity rises overnight.

Drake said fire officials will reassess the situation tomorrow morning to determine what else needs to be done.

The Army canceled a cultural access event by Malama Makua due to the ongoing fire operation.
