House Speaker Calvin Say today said he will not call the House back in to special session next week, meaning any vetoes issued by Gov. Linda Lingle will stand.

The decision was announced in a new release.

“It’s my personal belief that simply because we have the legislative super-majority to override is not justification for us to do so,” say said in a statement. “Partisan politics should not be a consideration or basis for any policy decision. 

“The House should be proud of the work accomplished during the regular session.”

Lingle last month sent the Legislature a list of 39 bills that may be vetoed, including House Bill 444, the civil union bill.

The governor has said she likely will not decide on that bill until July 6, her deadline to issue any vetoes.
