Man dies after diving into ocean from cliffs at Portlock

A local man in his 40s died after diving from the cliffs at Portlock in Hawaii Kai tonight.

Fire rescue personnel were called at 6:56 p.m. to the area above the Spitting Caves, where five men had been jumping into the ocean 50 to 60 feet below, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

When one of the men didn’t resurface, the others dove in to look for him.

Firefighters arrived at 7:03 p.m., and the friends told them the missing man was last seen 20 minutes earlier.

Firefighters donned snorkels and masks and spotted the man 30 to 40 feet underwater, but could not reach him without scuba equipment.

About five to seven minutes later, rescue personnel, using scuba gear, and brought the man up.

They tried to resuscitate the man, but were unsuccessful.

He was transferred to the Maunalua Bay boat ramp, where he was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at 7:40 p.m. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
