Woman pleads no contest in killing

A 27-year-old Makakilo woman accused of causing a fatal traffic collision while speeding and driving drunk pleaded no contest yesterday to manslaughter.

Kristin Maile Mancao, 27, faces either 20 years in prison or 10 years on probation, including up to 18 months behind bars, when a state judge sentences her in August.

Deputy Prosecutor Michelle Puu said she will ask the judge to impose the 20-year prison term because she does not believe 18 months in prison is an appropriate punishment for Mancao’s actions. However, she said Mancao has a good chance at probation because she has no prior convictions or violations for speeding or drunken driving.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Mancao on manslaughter charges just over a month ago for the July 25 traffic death of 52-year-old Norbert Dean Galban. Galban was also known as Dean Norbert Gomes.

Mancao pleaded no contest without a plea agreement because "she’s been trying to make up for what happened," said her lawyer, Marcus Sierra.
