The 12th annual Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii brought more than a dozen players from Hawaii, Japan and around the world to a pair of stages at Victoria Ward Park in Kakaako on Sunday. Among the performers: Bryan Tolentino, Mark Yamanaka, Byron Yasui and Benny Chong. The picnic is the brainchild of Japanese rock star Kazuyuki Sekiguchi, from the band the Southern All Stars. The art festival has grown into a global phenomenon, with gallery shows, lecture series, schools for art and music, mural projects, a large creative space named Lana Lane Studios, concerts, and live art installations across the globe. The soulful R&B jams of the '60s were recreated with 15 of Honolulu’s fiercest soul singers last weekend, with performances by Jonah Jaxon, Melodie Soul, Ginai, Melissa Diallo, Gabriel Miller, The Elevations and others. A 10-piece live band, The Powerhouse Horns, provided brass, keys, and backing vocalists for each singer. Kings of Spade and Keith Batlin’s Blues Experience also performed. See gallery

Top Hawaii entertainers joined together at The Republik on Jan. 31 to pay respects to Honolulu police officers Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama, who were killed in the Hibiscus Drive shooting in Diamond Head on Jan. 19. Makaha rapper Punahele celebrated his album “The Menehune Giant,” at HB Social Club on Jan. 31 with fellow hip-hop artists Rukka the Magnificent, Illnomadic, Doctabarz, Paul Aguila Alambatin and Itsjusrileydoe. Punahele’s previous album, “From Beneath Mt. Ka’ala,” won a Na Hoku Hanohano award for Hip Hop Album of the Year in 2019. See gallery

On Living History Day on Jan. 24, Gen. Douglas MacArthur made his return to the USS Missouri. Actually, it was an actor, but along with bands from Kaimuki and Castle high school band, a display of military vehicles and other activities, the event gave visitors a chance to experience some of the cherished history of the battleship, where the surrender of Japan was formally signed in 1945.
