I’m not your typical politician. I support term limits for all politicians, voter approved pay raises for all politicians, home rule (giving the people in the counties more say than the state), and balancing the budget (not spending more than the government brings in) by making priority choices.

What makes you qualified to be a state senator?

I’ve lived in Hawaii since 1973, worked for a small business, own a small business, have a master’s of science degree in systems management from USC, and worked as an adviser for a state department head in the areas of quality, process improvement and strategic planning.

Gov. Ige says he will once again propose increases to the state gas tax, vehicle weight tax and state registration fees to help pay for state road projects. Do you support his proposal?

We don’t need to increase taxes. Government needs to spend the money it receives more efficiently. Seems like every time I turn around government wants to increase fees or taxes. Shame. It is a matter of priorities, not more money. Politicians are unwilling to say no to spending.

If the Legislature is again asked to extend Oahu’s half-percent excise tax surcharge to finance construction or operation of the rail system, would you support such an extension?

It is an Oahu concern. If the proposed tax increase just applies to people living on Oahu, well, that’s their politician’s concern. People living on neighboring islands should not be affected one iota.

Should the state play a role in cracking down on illegal vacation rentals in Hawaii?

If “illegal” vacation rentals are paying appropriate taxes, why care? If they are not, lower the beam. All businesses should be treated equally. Period.

Should the Legislature require that police officers in Hawaii use “body cameras,” and help to fund the use of those cameras?

Police have a hard job. There are a lot of “Monday morning quarterbacks” out there. But police should wear body cameras to document what came down. If it was suspect, the police should handle it internally. If it was illegal, the officer should be fired.

Dozens of police officers throughout the state are disciplined each year for committing crimes or violating departmental policies, but little information is released about the officers or their cases. Do you think there needs to be greater public disclosure?

The police should be allowed to handle disciplinary actions internally. I do not see where making these actions public would help improve the situation. However, if a police officer did something illegal, she or he should be fired automatically. Period.
