Huki opens at the Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center premiered its new activity, Huki, which explores Polynesian myths and customs. Visitors on Saturday could experience an array of canoes and double-hulled vessels, carrying drummers, dancers, singers and storytellers, performing to both traditional and new music. See gallery

Great Waikiki Beer Fest 2018 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village

More than 100 beers from Hawaii, the mainland and beyond were featured at Great Waikiki Beer Festival, which was held for the fourth time at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort’s Great Lawn on Saturday. Visitors could also enjoy beer-friendly food and music Ilona Irvine, Lana Kei featuring Da Famili and Forté at the benefit for the Wounded Warrior Ohana. See gallery

Bon Dance at Pearl City Hongwangi Mission

The Pearl City Hongwanji Mission held its Obon dance last weekend. Over its three days, visitors could dance to the music of Ewa Fukushima Ondo and Young Okinawans, shop at a country store and craft fair and enjoy cultural foods. See gallery

Hawaii Rainbow Film Festival 2018

Supporters of Hawaii’s LGBTQ community gathered on Aug. 9 at the Honolulu Museum of Art Pavilion to celebrate the opening of the film festival. The festival continues through Sunday, with a closing night celebration Friday at the Honolulu Museum of Art and a “red carpet” event on Saturday at the Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach. Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival 2018

The music was sweet at the 36th annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival “Waikiki Style,” which brought some of the islands’ top slack-key guitarists to the Waikiki Aquarium on Saturday. Brother Noland, Nathan Aweau, Ho‘okena, Eric Lee, Donald Kaulia, Dwight Kanae, Stephen Inglis, George Kuo, Moon Kahele, Kamuela Kahoano, Aja Gample, Jonah Domingo and others performed. See gallery

Polynesian Voyaging Society Membership Drive in Kakaako

The Polynesian Voyaging Society sponsored a membership drive at The Flats at Pu‘unui in Kakaako on Saturday, allowing members to help paint a mural on the apartment building’s courtyard and fountain. John “Prime” Hina of the street art collective 808 Urban led the project, which was create to honor the Hokule‘a and other PVS activities. See gallery

Comic Con Honoulu 2018 at the Hawai‘i Convention Center

First Friday at the Hawaii State Art Museum

Two First Friday events took place at the Hawaii State Art Museum on Aug. 3. Works by globally recognized Hawaii artists Ashley Bickerton, Kaili Chun, Yvonne Cheng, Paul Pfeiffer, Garnett Puett and Lawrence Seward were unveiled at Artizen by MW Cafe Gallery and the HiSAM Museum Gallery Shop as part of the Hawaii Artists 2018 Portfolio Project, sponsored by Friends of the State Art Museum. Upstairs, the museum celebrated the opening of “STATE OF ART: new work,” showcasing 31 pieces by Hawaii artists. See gallery

First Friday in Chinatown

Photographers and photography fans gathered at the Arts at Marks Garage to appreciate Pacific New Media’s 10th annual “Contemporary Photography in Hawaii” show, featuring the work of 26 artists. Art was on display throughout Chinatown and the arts district, including at the Naughty Vegan Studio, where artist Alicia Soder met with art lovers at a reception for “Groove,” her new exhibit. Summer Bash at the Hawaii Convention Center

Hawaii’s Finest Summer Bash at the Hawaii Convention Center returned for a second year, featuring the return of Kolohe Kai, aka Roman de Peralta, who satisfied fans with his first Oahu appearance in three years. Island contemporary artists Maoli, Ekolu, Mana‘o Company, Kapena, PeniDean, Irie Love, Jimmy Weeks and Malino joined in with their own sweet sounds. See gallery

MayJah RayJah Music Festival

Katchafire, the Maori reggae band from New Zealand, headlined the two-day MayJah RayJah 2018 Music Festival last weekend, appearing on July 27 at 3 Acres Park in Waipahu along with local artists Mahkess, the Jimmy Weeks Project and others. Locals-turned-California group Iration kept the party going the next night, helped by Rebel Souljahz, Ooklah the Moc and others. See gallery

Maoli gives preview of new album

“With Love,” Maoli’s new album, got a preview at the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club on Sunday, presented by Revive the Live. The band has been an island favorite since releasing its debut album “Groovin’” in 2008. See gallery

Ke Kani O Ke Kai Summer Concert Series

The Waikiki Aquarium hosted island favorites John Cruz, Hapa and Streetlight Cadence at its Ke Kani O Ke Kai Summer Concert Series on July 26. Guests explored the aquarium’s galleries and exhibits and took in the music on its beach-front lawn. See gallery
