Mindy Pennybacker has retired as a staff writer at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

 

Born and raised in Honolulu, Pennybacker graduated from Stanford University, University of Iowa Writers Workshop and UC Davis School of Law.

 

In New York City, she worked for the Trust for Public Land, Natural Resources Defense Council, Glamour and This Old House magazines, and as editor for The Green Guide, an award-winning national, green-lifestyle print and online publication. In Honolulu, served as editor for Honolulu Weekly before joining the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in 2015.

 

She is the author of "Do One Green Thing," (Harper, 2010).

State parks seek input to update 5-year recreational plan

Koko Crater summit to close 3 weeks for repairs

For three weeks starting Monday, a popular hikers’ viewing platform will be off-limits: the Koko Crater summit area atop the Koko Crater tramway trail is scheduled to be closed to the public daily through April 19 for work to mitigate safety issues, the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation announced Wednesday in a news release. Resolution to move highway inland in Makaha advances

For decades, oceangoers and residents of West Oahu have pressed the city and state to take Farrington Highway off the sands of historic Makaha Beach and move it inland, as had been recommended in a 1998 Honolulu master plan and a 1985 study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Read more

Proposal for condo towers in Kakaako Makai dies

Kicking off a Save Our Kakaako Coalition rally Tuesday morning on the steps of the state Capitol, state House Speaker Scott Saiki announced the death of a bill seeking to change existing law to allow the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs to build housing in Kakaako Makai. Read more
