The Hawaii Department of Public Safety said today that the deaths of five male Halawa Correctional Facility inmates in January have been classified as COVID-19-related.

The Hawaii Department of Public Safety announced today that state health officials have classified the deaths of five male Halawa Correctional Facility inmates as COVID-19-related.

All five men were above the age of 65 and the deaths occurred in January. No additional information is being provided to protect individual medical privacy, DPS officials said.

The latest death brings the coronavirus-related death toll for prisoners from Hawaii to eight.

On Wednesday, DPS announced that an inmate in his 50s with COVID-19 at Halawa Correctional Facility had died, becoming the third prisoner from Hawaii to die with the virus. The first two were Hawaii men imprisoned in the Saguaro Correctional Center in Arizona.

DPS said today that Halawa has three active positive inmate cases, two of whom are in medical isolation at the prison and one who is hospitalized.
