State transportation officials say that a pedestrian sensor on Farrington Highway in Waianae that has been repeatedly vandalized has been set in “pedestrian recall” mode until repairs can be made.

That means that the traffic signal at the intersection of Farrington and Mailiili Road next to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center will automatically change to a “walk” phase for possible pedestrians crossing the road.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation says that typically, this intersection runs off sensors in the road and times signal changes when there is a pedestrian waiting to cross or a vehicle waiting on Mailiili Road. In “pedestrian recall” mode, however, motorists heading straight down Farrington Highway may get a red light although no cars or pedestrians are crossing the intersection.

The sensors at the intersection have been damaged by repeated acts of vandalism which involved cutting cable to the point that it is now too short for crews to splice together, officials said.

“HDOT is working with the City and County Department of Transportation Services, who will assist with the repair,” said the department in a news release. “HDOT is also seeking emergency services to expedite the installation of new cable.”

In addition, the department is working with the Honolulu Police Department to discourage vandals from damaging the system.

Officials ask motorists to continue to exercise caution and patience when driving through the area. Lane closures will be necessary for the repair, and will be posted ahead of time at this link.

Officials said the public should call 9-1-1 if anyone is witnessed tampering with highway equipment.
