Hawaii’s forecast has it all: high surf, strong winds, possible thunderstorms, and even a little snow

Weather officials have issued high surf, wind, gale, and small craft advisories for the Hawaiian islands today, in addition to a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits.

The high surf advisory for the north and west shores of of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai and north shores of Maui, was extended through noon today as a northwest swell subsides.

Surf of 12 to 16 feet along north shores this morning is expected to gradually lower to 10 to 14 feet tonight, and to 7 to 10 feet on Saturday morning.

A high surf advisory has also been issued for east shores of all islands from Kauai to the Big Island due to strong tradewinds, which will create rough surf of 6 to 8 feet today, and 7 to 10 feet Saturday. The advisory for east shores remains in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday

The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for portions of Maui County, including Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island due to east-northeast winds of 20 to 35 mph, with localized gusts up to 50 mph today. The wind advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. today.

In addition, forecasters warn of a “wintry mix” of snow and freezing rain over Big Island summits today, bringing up to 2 inches of snow. The winter weather advisory also remains in effect through 6 p.m. today.

Today’s forecast for the islands is partly sunny, but includes showers — mostly for Maui and the Big Island where thunderstorms are also possible — along with widespread windy conditions.

Highs today will range from 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and lows tonight dip to 69 to 74. East winds of 15 to 30 mph are expected to continue through tonight.

Conditions are expected to improve over the weekend, but showers are still expected for windward and mauka areas through Saturday.

A gale warning for Alenuihaha Channel, and a small craft advisory for most waters from northwest of Kauai to southeast of the Big Island, remain in effect through 6 p.m. today.
