The federal government has notified Hawaii that as much as 40% of some vaccine orders will be delayed due to production, but the state is still expecting to receive more than 81,000 doses by year’s end.

Other states have been notified of delays as well, the Department of Health told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

“At this time we still expect to get as many as 45,825 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine by the end of December,” a DOH spokesman said. “We also continue to anticipate delivery of as many as 36,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine by the end of the year, pending FDA approval.”

Hawaii’s initial order of 4,875 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which was slated to arrive on Monday, was also delayed. Instead, the state received only one tray with 975 doses, while the remaining 3,900 doses arrived Wednesday.

“DOH will be flexible in receiving delivery of vaccines and is committed to administering the vaccination program in a safe and secure manner. The public’s patience with this enormous process is greatly appreciated.”
