The National Weather Service canceled a flood advisory for Hawaii island issued earlier today.

Weather radar showed that heavy rains have diminished.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii island, effective through 7 p.m. today.

At 3:53 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the Kona slopes of Hawaii island. Rain was falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour. The heaviest rainfall was occurring over the North Kona district.

Officials said these showers and thunderstorms are slow-moving, with additional development possible through the rest of the afternoon.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, Waikoloa Village, Honalo, Holualoa, Kainaliu, Kealakekua, Pohakuloa Training Area, Puuanahulu, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Honaunau, Kalaoa, Pohakuloa Camp, Puako, Waikii, Kona International Airport, Waikoloa Beach and Mauna Lani.

The NWS has also issued a high surf advisory for the north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, and Molokai, and north facing shores of Maui, effective from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday.

Surf of 12 to 16 feet is expected along north facing shores, and 8 to 12 feet along west facing shores.

While trades will continue to pick up momentum across Hawaii, forecasters say wetter weather and isolated thunderstorms are on the way due to two disturbances moving into the isles.

The National Weather Service said a “period of wet trade wind weather” is expected to last through Friday due to two disturbances — one approaching Kauai from the north and the other approaching Hawaii island from the southeast.

Today’s forecast is partly to mostly cloudy, with increasing shower activity, and highs from 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonight is also expected to be mostly cloudy, with lows from 70 to 75.

A few thunderstorms and locally heavy showers are expected to develop over Niihau and Kauai this afternoon, while very wet weather is expected for Oahu and Maui County on Thursday and Friday. The isolated thunderstorms and heavy showers are also expected to impact Hawaii island through Friday.

Trades are expected to continue at 10 to 25 mph through tonight, and pick up to 15 to 25 mph Thursday and Friday.

On Hawaii island, cold temperatures aloft may produce 1 to 2 inches of snow over the highest peaks of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa tonight through Friday morning.

Surf, meanwhile, remains below advisory levels on all sides, but may meet thresholds over the next day or two.

Surf along north and west facing shores lowers from 6 to 8 feet this morning to 5 to 7 feet this afternoon as a swell that peaked Tuesday moves on.

A new, west-northwest swell, however, is expected to begin filling in tonight, then peak Thursday into Thursday night, boosting surf on north shores up to 12 to 16 feet on Thursday morning.

Surf on west facing shores at 4 to 6 feet this morning lowers to 3 to 5 feet tonight, then bumps back up to 8 to 12 feet Thursday morning.

Surf on east facing shores is expected to trend up, as well, from 3 to 5 feet today to 4 to 6 feet on Thursday, and may reach the advisory threshold Friday through the weekend as trades strengthen.

Surf on south facing shores remains at 1 to 3 feet today through Thursday.

Weather officials continue to warn of “nuisance coastal flooding” due to higher than expected ocean water levels combined with high tides, particularly during early morning hours.

The impacts include minor coastal erosion and salt water inundation of low-lying roads, docks, boat ramps and other infrastructure.
