A long-sought solution to the Laniakea Beach highway-crossing problem might finally be emerging. That’s the hope, at least. The city is putting up a 1,200-foot chain-link fence to delineate its land long used as makeshift parking across the popular “Turtle Beach,” where sunning turtles lure folks to dash across Kamehameha Highway, causing a traffic hazard.

It’s unclear how, and if, the fencing and possible future controls such as mauka-side guardrails or a crosswalk will help. But one thing that’s likely helped ease congestion today: The sheer drop of Hawaii tourists, which means fewer visitors to this and other attractions.
