Off the News: Plastic serviceware gets reprieve
It’s hard to find anything we agree on during these contentious times, but here’s one: It makes sense to give Oahu stores that sell prepared food an extra three months to use up their plastic serving gear. Under the city’s ordinance, the conversion to non-fossil-fuel-based utensils was due to start Jan. 1.
Even the Sierra Club found this acceptable, while underscoring the need to curb trash.
Similar local laws around the country are being delayed, so Hawaii is not alone in giving a grace period.
