A northwest swell arriving on Sunday is expected to produce “dangerously large breaking waves” along most of north and west-facing shorelines of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Maui County.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning in anticipation of the swell, which is expected to peak late Sunday and Sunday night before lowering Monday.

Surf will first rise Sunday morning on Kauai before spreading to the other islands.

The NWS expects waves of 20 to 30 feet with locally higher sets along the north-facing shores of Niihau, Kauai and Maui County, and waves of 15 to 20 feet on the west-facing shores of Kauai, Oahu and Molokai.

“Expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves, and strong longshore and rip currents,” the NWS said in a coastal hazard message today. “Breaking waves may occasionally impact harbors making navigating the harbor channel dangerous.”

Weather officials advise against going into the water.

“Anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death,” the NWS said.
