University of Hawaii football game still on despite player testing positive for coronavirus
Saturday’s football game between the University of Hawaii and San Jose State will be played despite a Rainbow Warrior receiving a positive result for the coronavirus today, school officials announced Friday night.
The player, who was not identified publicly, was the only Warrior to have a positive result from team-wide testing administered on Thursday. More than 100 players, coaches and staff are tested on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday each week during this eight-week regular season.
The player and four other non-football-playing students are in isolation.
“On Friday morning, we were notified of one positive COVID-19 case within our football program,” UH athletic director David Matlin tweeted. “That individual has since self-isolated and contact tracing began immediately. We are following all proper state, county, and university protocol, and our medical team is closely monitoring the situation. Tomorrow’s game will go on as scheduled. Since the football team resumed fall camp in September, this positive case is our first in 3,681 test among the team, coaching staff, and support staff. This week alone, 454 tests were administered.”
UH notified state health officials and the San Jose State football team. The Spartans’ previous two games were canceled because of COVID-19-related situations involving Fresno State and Boise State.
