California man and son arrested on Maui, are returning home after violating quarantine rules
Maui police arrested a California man and his adult son for failing to follow mandatory, 14-day quarantine rules upon arriving in Kahului on Thursday evening.
Police said that Mark Gavin, 67, and Zane Gavin, 20, of California flew into Kahului Airport at about 8 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, they did not have an approved, negative pre-travel COVID-19 test, which would have allowed them to bypass the quarantine under the state’s Safe Travels program.
Police arrested them at about 9:30 p.m. after they were unable to provide information on reservations for their “place of lodging” for the mandatory quarantine. The Gavins later indicated that they did not know about the required negative testing or travel quarantine, police said.
They were released from police custody at noon today, and are voluntarily returning to California.
Maui County currently has travel restrictions and face mask mandates in place. Police urged visitors and returning residents to Maui to check the most current emergency proclamations in place at Hawaii.gov and Mauicounty.gov.
