An Oahu grand jury has indicted a 31-year-old man accused of attempted murder and sexual assault of a woman in downtown Honolulu.

Michael T. Hirokawa was indicted Wednesday on charges of second-degree attempted murder, kidnapping and three counts of first-degree sexual assault.

The grand jury also issued a $500,000 bench warrant Wednesday for his arrest.

In a statement today, Hawaii Attorney General Claire Connors said, “This was a heinous act of sexual violence and our department will vigorously prosecute it.”

The state requested a no bail grand jury bench warrant, but the court denied the request pending a hearing on the matter.

In response, the attorney general’s office today said, “A motion for no bail will be filed expeditiously.”

Hirokawa was released from custody Nov. 23 after posting a $500,000 bail bond two days after his arrest.

The alleged brutal assault occurred sometime before 2:05 a.m. Saturday in a unit on the 27th floor of the Capitol Place condominium, 1200 Queen Emma St.

Police responded to a dropped 911 call at the residential building. When officers arrived, police said they found a woman lying nude outside of an elevator and bleeding profusely. The woman was able to tell officers the suspect’s location in the building.

When officers reached the 27th floor unit, they observed a trail of blood from the kitchen and living room leading into a bedroom.

Officers found the suspect, later identified as Hirokawa, sleeping with a “substantial amount of blood throughout the white bed sheets and all over Hirokawa’s hands and forearms,” according to court documents.

Police arrested Hirokawa that morning on suspicion of attempted murder.

The woman suffered a deep laceration to her private area and was taken in critical condition to a hospital where she underwent emergency surgery.
