Honolulu police said today that they have opened a first-degree arson investigation in connection with Thursday’s fire at the Ross Dress for Less store in Kapolei.

Firefighters responded to the fire just after 11:50 a.m. When they first unit arrived, they observed store items ablaze.

A shopper said she saw women’s clothing on fire and headed to the front of the store to alert employees when she observed a large fire at the men’s clothing rack in another section of the store.

Shoppers and employees evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Carl Otsuka said the store’s sprinkler system and a fire extinguisher used by firefighters brought the flames under control at about noon and extinguished a few minutes.

Damage to the structure and its contents was estimated at $100,000.

Fire inspectors determined the cause of the fire was incendiary and turned the case over to police.

No arrests have been made in the case.
