Forecasters extend wind, surf advisories as Hawaii enjoys tradewind weather

Surf is expected to remain at advisory levels of 7 to 10 feet on eastern shores from Kauai to Hawaii island through 6 p.m. Friday.

A high surf advisory for east shores of Hawaii has been extended to Friday evening, while a wind advisory has been extended through 6 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service warns that strong northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts over 50 mph, are expected for portions of Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii island due to a strong high pressure system north of the state.

Surf is expected to remain at advisory levels of 7 to 10 feet on eastern shores from Kauai to Hawaii island through 6 p.m. Friday.

Forecasters say wet tradewind weather will remain in the islands for the next several days, while breezy to strong trades will continue today, but decrease from Friday into the weekend.

Today’s forecast includes blustery, wet trades, with highs from 84 to 89 degrees. Tonight is expected to be mostly cloudy, with lows from 72 to 77.

Tradewinds are expected to continue at 15 to 30 mph through tonight.

While rough and choppy surf will bring advisory level surf to eastern shores, surf on all other shores will remain well below advisory levels, forecasters said.

Surf is expected to remain at 0 to 2 feet for southern and western shores,, and at 2 to 4 feet for northern shores, today through Friday.

A gale warning for Alenuihaha Channel due to east winds of 35 knots and gusts up to 45 knots, remains in effect through 6 p.m. today.

A small craft advisory for most major channels, Hawaii island waters, Maui County leeward and windward waters, Kauai waters, and Oahu windward and leeward waters, remains in effect through 6 a.m. Friday.

While the winds are expected to diminish on Friday and the weekend, forecasters say a cold front is expected to move in from the north on Monday evening.
