Man in his 70s dies in pedestrian accident in Nanakuli

Honolulu police have reopened lanes on Farrington Highway at the intersection of Haleakala Avenue in Nanakuli following an early morning fatal pedestrian accident.

Police said a gray 2000 Toyota Camry driven by a 64-year-old man was traveling east on the highway at about 4:45 a.m. today when it struck a male pedestrian who was in a marked crosswalk at the intersection.

The driver and his passenger stayed at the scene.

Emergency Medical Services personnel and firefighters arrived and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the man to no avail.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Positive identification is pending.

EMS personnel described the pedestrian to be in his 50s.

A resident who declined to give her name said the pedestrian was in his 70s. He visited Depot Beach Park located near the intersection where he fed cats every morning for many years, she said.

A bag of cat food was observed near the scene of the deadly collision.

Police had contraflowed traffic in the area as they conducted their investigation. Officers reopened lanes shortly after 7:10 a.m.

Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision. Police also confirmed this afternoon that the pedestrian is in his 70s.

This is the 42nd traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 41 at the same time last year.
