Five members of Hawaii’s Committee on Marijuana Education picketed the Japanese Consulate to protest the arrest of former Beatle Paul McCartney on marijuana charges in Tokyo. A Japanese judge ruled that McCartney could be held in jail for another 10 days while officials decide whether to prosecute or deport him for allegedly smuggling nearly half a pound of marijuana into Tokyo Airport.

Glenn Hoppus looks over a 100-year-old hearse that arrived on the Hawaiian Merchant. Hoppus found the carved ebony hearse in Indiana after a long search and plans to loan it to Hawaiian Memorial Park for “civic and community parades,” he said.

Hundreds of students from all over the state gathered at the Ilikai Hotel’s Pacific Ballroom for the Bicentennial Colonial Costume Ball, with guests including Gov. George Ariyoshi and wife Jean Ariyoshi. And if his honor looked improbable in a white wig, it was at least in the spirit of things.

Francis and Linda won and will compete in the State Finals.
