Hawaii sees 3 COVID-19 deaths on Oahu and 102 new coronavirus cases statewide

Hawaii Department of Health officials said Oahu’s latest coronavirus-related deaths were two men and a woman in their 70s who were hospitalized with COVID-19 and had underlying health conditions. No other details were provided about the victims.

Of the 46,923 new surge tests conducted so far, a total of 295 or less than 1% have tested positive. On Monday, Oahu completed free surge testing offered by the city in partnership with state and federal partners, including the U.S. Surgeon General.

“After two days of double-digit case counts, DOH reports a slight increase into the low triple digits with 102 new cases today,” state health officials said in a news release.

In other developments today, Gov. David Ige announced Oct. 15 as the new date to launch a pre-arrivals testing program to reopen tourism in Hawaii. Ige also appointed Anne E. Perreira-Eustaquio as director of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations and JoAnn A. Vidinhar as the deputy director.

Hawaii Department of Health officials today reported three new coronavirus-related deaths and 102 new infections statewide, bringing the state’s totals since the beginning of the pandemic to 103 fatalities and 10,946 COVID-19 cases.

No further information was immediately available about the latest deaths on Oahu.

A total of 90 deaths have been on Oahu, nine on Maui, three on the Big Island, while one was a Kauai resident who died on the mainland, according to state health officials.

Hawaii County Civil Defense this morning reported there are now 15 deaths at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home, bringing Hawaii island’s death toll to 16. Thirteen deaths in Hawaii County have yet to be counted in the state tally pending a verification process, according to state health officials.

The U.S. death toll surpassed 196,000 today.

Hawaii’s new cases today included 97 on Oahu, four cases on Hawaii island and one case diagnosed outside of the state.

As of today, 6,738 infections are considered active cases statewide, with a total of 4,105 patients now classified by health officials as “released from isolation,” or about 37% of those infected. The category counts those infected people who have met the criteria for being released from isolation. Officials reported 220 new release cases today.

Today’s total coronavirus cases by county since the start of the outbreak are 9,879 on Oahu, 603 in Hawaii County, 378 in Maui County, and 58 in Kauai County. There are also 28 Hawaii residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Officials counted 2,492 new tests in today’s tally, with today’s 102 positive cases representing 4% of the total tested. Of the 265,500 coronavirus tests conducted so far by state and clinical laboratories in Hawaii since the start of the outbreak, a total of 4.1% have been positive.

On Monday’s “Spotlight Hawaii,” the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Facebook Live show, Gov. David Ige said he expects to again delay the reopening of Hawaii tourism beyond the planned Oct. 1 start date. He said he plans to announce a new schedule for reopening the state’s top industry in the next few days. Ige has scheduled a press conference today at 2:30 p.m.

Lt. Gov. Josh Green, who tested positive for coronavirus, said today that there are now 210 confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients in Hawaii hospitals, with 56 of them in intensive care units and 38 on ventilators. He said that 164, or 67%, of the state’s 244 ICU beds, and 91, or 20%, of Hawaii’s 459 ventilators are in use, by both coronavirus and non-virus patients.

Of all the confirmed Hawaii cases, 667 have required hospitalizations, with 13 new hospitalizations reported today, health officials said.

Two hospitalizations in the statewide count are Hawaii residents who were diagnosed and treated outside the state. Of the 665 hospitalizations in the state, 590 have been on Oahu, 47 on Maui, 27 on Hawaii island, and one on Kauai.

By county, Honolulu has seen 3,412 patients released from isolation, Hawaii County has had 394 releases, Maui has seen 242 patients released. Kauai has no active cases as of today, according to the Health Department.
