Bicyclist, 42, fatally struck in hit-and-run near Sunset Beach

Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that has left a bicyclist dead in the Sunset Beach area of Oahu’s North Shore.

At about 5:15 a.m., police said an unidentified vehicle traveling northeast along Kamehameha Highway veered left for an unknown reason and struck a male bicyclist heading in the same direction on an unimproved shoulder. The vehicle then fled the scene.

Paramedics pronounced the man, 42, of Sunset Beach, dead at the scene.

The highway was initially closed in both directions at about 6 a.m. as police investigated the scene, then one contraflow lane was opened. At about 8:45 p.m., police said the investigation was complete, and reopened the highway.

Police said this is the 37th traffic fatality for Oahu this year compared to 39 at the same time in 2019. Only one other bicyclist fatality has been recorded, so far, this year, by the state Department of Transportation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the HPD Traffic Division at 723-3413.
