Public asked to stay out of Kailua Bay in Kona after 20K gallons of sewage spilled

Approximately 20,000 gallons of wastewater was discharged today in Kailua Bay in Kona, Hawaii island.
Hawaii island residents and visitors are advised to stay out of waters in Kailua Bay following a sewage spill in the bay earlier today.
Approximately 20,000 gallons of sewage entered the bay after a sewer line broke just before 10 a.m. today, the state Department of Health’s Clean Water Branch said.
“The public is advised to remain out of Kailua Bay until this advisory has been canceled,” the advisory said.
Signs have been posted and water samples have been collected, health officials said.
Alii Drive between Kailua Pier and Sarona Road was reopened after a two-hour closure.
