P.C. (Pete) Beamer’s Hardware Store, an institution on Hilo’s Kamehameha Avenue for the past 65 years, is going to close. The 94-year-old Beamer, one of Hilo’s most revered and legendary citizens, sells everything from horse collars to old razors.

Waikiki social notes: Oscar, a California bit actor who was booked into Ala Moana Center to entertain Christmas shoppers, convalesces in the surf off Waikiki Aquarium. The long-whiskered trouper fell from the center’s stage and suffered a concussion while taking a bow Dec. 7. Supporting Oscar’s head is his trainer and manager, Homer Snow. The actor is reported fully recovered.

Waikiki’s new theater, the Royal, opens with the premiere of “Becket,” starring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole. The theater, at Kuhio Avenue and Kanekapolei Street, is owned by Royal Theatres Ltd.

STARADVERTISER / DECEMBER 13, 1957

Al Slagle, right, a Star-Bulletin reporter, had to crawl against the gale to get to the overturned sedan where tow service workers sought shelter from the roaring wind estimated as high as 80 miles per hour. Mrs. John Sitch of 334 Auwinala Road and her children Mike, 2, and Warren, 4, were terrified though uninjured when their car was overturned by a gust at the Pali summit. They caught a ride home.

The Jokers, teenage Oahu ballad singers, are touring Hollywood this week. They won first place recently in the statewide Show of Stars amateur talent contest sponsored by the Hawaii Youth Talent Council. Aloha Stadium was crowded with little Uncle Sams and Samanthas, who were among the 4,000 keiki from the state Department of Parks and Recreation’s Summer Fun Olympics. These supporters gracing the stands in their patriotic attire are from the Enchanted Lake program.
