Two new stars grace the nation’s flag this year, marking statehood for Hawaii and Alaska. All over America the flag is receiving particular attention since today is Flag Day. In this photo two Northwest Orient Air Lines stewardesses, Akemi Fukushima, left, and Irma Hansen, display the 50-star flag.

“Hawaii Five-0” star Jack Lord greeted a sea of hands, smiles and cameras in Honolulu after a testimonial in his honor. The tribute — a luncheon with entertainment provided by many show business personalities — was estimated to have raised at least $15,000 for the Variety Club, which operates a school for children with learning disabilities.

STARADVERTISER / DECEMBER 5, 1970

David Dargie inspects his pride and joy — a working scale model of a sugar mill crushing plant valued at $10,000. Dargie spent 35 years making the model from plans for a real mill. Dargie will give the model to the Hawaiian Sugar Planters’ Association.

About 30 of the Cherry Blossom Queen contestants turned out in colorful Japanese garb to greet Crown Prince Akihito as he strode from the SS President Wilson to his waiting car. Mixed reactions to the someday titular head of Japan were caught by the camera on the faces of these young women.
