Wearing a golf-ball lei, Mayor Eileen Anderson whacked the first ball off the tee to mark the reopening of the Kapiolani Driving Range yesterday. The driving range is open from 7 a.m. to midnight Tuesday through Sunday and 1 p.m. to midnight Monday.

Honolulu Savings & Loan opened its new Manoa-McCully branch office with festivities that include special gifts for residents and businessmen in the area between Pensacola Street and 5th Avenue. The firm is mailing out 25,000 keys for the grand prize — a Dodge Dart — but only one fits, and the recipient of that key gets the car. The new branch at 1806 S. King St. was built at a cost of more than $250,000.

The bizarre-looking vessel moored at Sans Souci pier for the past few days belongs to none other than the legendary travel impresario Donn (Donn the Beachcomber) Beach. Called a “fare” (pronounced fa-ray, which means “house” in Tahitian) the 10-ton craft is the prototype for another in a series of Donn Beach enterprises. Designed as an “exotic rendezvous residence for two,” the fare features Polynesian decor luxuriously appointed in mahogany and teak, bamboo-paneled walls, full kitchen and bath conveniences, natural shell lighting and a unique combination dining table-aquarium-fishing platform. Paul Gantt, Beach’s nephew, shows off the vessel.

IBM’s Sandra Le Drew points out the electronic computer’s features to Bank of Hawaii’s Albert J. Maruyama. The bank installed the most advanced and powerful magnetic tape electronic computer system in civilian use. The system will be used for the bank’s record keeping.

The pineapple in this and nearby bins represents a $45,000 loss to the Dole Company. Forty-nine bins, containing 325 tons of fruit, were marooned on Lanai following a walkout of 44 truck drivers Wednesday in a dispute about who is to put gasoline in the trucks. Here a Dole supervisor examines decaying pineapple amid a swarm of tiny “souring bugs” attracted to the heady odor of the fruit.
