Just two days after reopening, Oahu shoppers continued to seek bargains at Ross Dress for Less stores across Hawaii.

Over two dozen shoppers waited in line Tuesday while social distancing at the Ross store on South King Street to snatch up merchandise, furniture and other items at a discounted prices.

The national discount chain closed all of its locations, including 20 in Hawaii, on March 20 to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Select locations around the country began reopening May 15. Hawaii stores reopened Sunday, while many posted Facebook photos of the long lines forming at Ross stores from Ewa Beach and Mililani to Hawaii Kai. Some Hawaii Toilet Paper Patrol members joked they would finally be able to buy high-demand items such as Clorox wipes and toilet paper at Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club stores thanks to the long lines at Ross stores.

Shopper Phillip Nielsen, a Waikiki resident, waited in line Tuesday afternoon to buy reading glasses which sold out by the time he got inside the store.

“It’s still busy in there, but what can you do?” he said.

Retail shops have been reopening in recent weeks. Nordstrom announced Tuesday that its store at Ala Moana Center will reopen Thursday.

Meanwhile, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced plans for reopening offices, museums, theaters and gyms. Hair salons, barber shops and tattoo parlors may possibly resume service this Friday.
