Hawaii Department of Health Director Bruce Anderson and University of Hawaii President David Lassner announced a $2.4 million UH training program to enhance the state’s coronavirus contact tracing, both in the short and long term.

Anderson said about 100 staff and volunteers statewide can currently be mobilized to conduct contact tracing. Anderson said the new training and certification program can ready about 100 more people a year, with the goal of extending the state’s pool of tracers to about 300 people. With 300, Anderson said, the state’s capacity for tracing would increase to 1,000 cases per day.
