Oahu man with COVID-19 dies, raising Hawaii’s coronavirus death toll to 15

An Oahu man infected with COVID-19 died Sunday evening, raising Hawaii’s coronavirus death toll to 15, state Department of Health officials announced.

The man, who was over 65-years-old and had underlying health conditions, had been in a hospital since early March, officials said.

His infection “was presumed to be community associated,” they said.

This was the 10th coronavirus-related death on Oahu. The other five deaths were on Maui.

Hawaii’s tally of coronavirus cases has risen to 606, up two from Saturday, the state Department of Health said today.

The state’s Joint COVID-19 Information Center said both of today’s two new cases are children and Hawaii residents.

Of all the confirmed cases in Hawaii since the start of the outbreak, 68 have required hospitalizations, with no new hospitalizations reported today, health officials said.

Hawaii’s coronavirus death toll stands at 14, unchanged from Saturday.

Today’s statewide total includes 396 cases on Oahu, 112 in Maui County, 70 on Hawaii island, and 21 in Kauai County, according to health officials. The statewide total also includes seven Hawaii residents diagnosed outside of the state.

Oahu and the Big Island had one new case each, officials said today.

A total 488 patients have recovered since the start of the outbreak, with health officials reporting six new recoveries today. About 80% of the people who have been infected in Hawaii are now classified as recovered.

By county, Honolulu has seen 346 patients recover, Maui has had 74 recoveries, the Big Island has had 49, and Kauai has seen 19, as of noon today, the Health Department says.

Of the 68 hospitalizations in the state, 53 have been on Oahu, 13 on Maui and one each on the Big Island and Kauai.

The COVID-19 Information Center officials also said that of the 28,091 coronavirus tests so far conducted by state and clinical laboratories in the islands, 2.15%, have been positive.

Of Hawaii’s 606 coronavirus cases, 317 have been travel-related cases, 224 are classified as community-spread cases, and the origin of 65 are unknown, state officials said.
