Waikiki is losing a 61-year-old landmark with the demolition of the Elks Club on Kalakaua Avenue. Ross Sutherland, a local clothing firm owner who purchased the four-story building in April to obtain some of its antiques, is having the club razed. Executives of KGMB-TV — Wayne Kearl, assistant general manager, left; C. Richard Evans, vice president and general manager, holding the sound transmitter switch; J. Howard Worrall, president, with his hand on the picture transmitter switch; and Daniel Hunter, chief engineer — stood by in the station’s transmitting room to throw the switches that put the station’s new high-power TV transmitters on the air for the first time on a scheduled telecasting basis yesterday.
