Police investigated the scene of a fatal pedestrian accident this morning in Kalihi on Likelike Highway.

An 80-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by a sedan in Kalihi early Wednesday.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Kalihi Street and Likelike Highway just before 5:20 a.m.

Lt. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said the pedestrian was seen crossing Kalihi Street in a marked crosswalk, however, the red “don’t walk” signal was illuminated.

A maroon 2004 Saturn operated by a 24-year-old man was traveling south in the far right lane of the highway and struck the pedestrian.

Emergency Medical Services responded and pronounced the 80-year-old man dead at the scene. Positive identification is pending.

The Saturn driver did not sustain any injuries.

Neither speed, drugs nor alcohol were factors in the collision.

Police temporarily closed two lanes on the highway at the intersection to investigate. Officers reopened lanes shortly before 7:50 a.m.

This is the 10th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 13 at the same time last year.
