Airline pilot James L. Banning takes eight kindergartners on a tour of “Oahu Railway” — 1,000 feet-plus of miniature track laid out near his Dowsett Highlands home. Banning began building his 1-inch-to-1-foot scale model in 1946, christened the engine Pegasus in 1959, and has been increasing track and rolling stock ever since.

These 105 mm howitzers from the 25th Infantry Division line the beach at Fort DeRussy in preparation for today’s 7:30 p.m. Grand Tattoo, a colorful military ceremony that’s part of the Army’s 208th-birthday celebration. The tattoo, a centuries- old military tradition, will include soldiers dressed in historic Army uniforms and introduction of the 50 state flags.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Hyman Greenstein drives a 1901 Oldsmobile onto the driveway of Washington Place, the governor’s mansion, across the street from his law office. Greenstein was defeated in the Democratic primary by John A. Burns, who went on to oust Republican incumbent Gov. William F. Quinn to become the state’s second governor.
