Las Vegas Advisor: Cirque show coming to Circus Circus Resort and Casino

Details of plans for a remake of Circus Circus Resort and Casino under new owner Phil Ruffin (who also owns Treasure Island) have been revealed. The 10-acre RV park adjacent to the resort will be replaced by a pool complex modeled after Mandalay Bay’s Beach. The Adventuredome indoor amusement park, which gets an annual 2.5 million admissions, will stay.

The neighboring Slots A Fun will be completely remodeled and the Circus casino will be upgraded in stages. An $11 million, 2,000-seat theater will be built at the front of the property to house a new Cirque du Soleil production “The Illusionists,” now playing in New York.

The family-friendly price point of the rooms will remain the same and as for paid parking, Ruffin commented, “I think it’s a stupid idea.”

‘Big Four’ coming to Las Vegas in 2020: Previously expected to be one of the biggest years in history for Las Vegas openings, delays for multiple projects have toned down the 2020 schedule significantly. However, four major projects are still expected to debut this year.

The “Big Four” consists of Allegiant Stadium, the Las Vegas Convention Center expansion, Circa resort and the conversion of the Hard Rock to Virgin Las Vegas. With the exception of Allegiant, which will open in July in time to accommodate the Oakland Raiders’ NFL schedule, all are expected toward the end of the year, with downtown’s Circa sneaking in just under the year-end deadline.

Big convention centers from Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Las Vegas and a new tower at the Downtown Grand are also slated to open.

Delayed: As for those significant delays, the MSG Sphere was the first to announce a pushback to 2021. Soon after came a similar announcement from Resorts World Las Vegas, the huge Asian-themed resort at center-Strip. Then it was announced that the Drew (formerly Fountainebleau) would be delayed — not to 2021, but to 2022. Completely discontinued projects include the Kind Heaven project at the LINQ Promenade and Wynn West, the prospective new casino from Wynn Resorts on the site of the former New Frontier.

Big royal at Boulder: A video poker player at Boulder Station hit a sequential royal flush in hearts the last week of December on a $1 progressive video poker machine for a $180,278.50 jackpot. The player was dealt the A, K, Q and J of hearts, in that order, then popped the 10 of hearts on the draw to start an early New Year’s celebration.

Fido friendly: MGM Resorts International has introduced a list of canine courtesies at all of its Las Vegas properties. The program includes complimentary treats at check-in, a map of relief areas on property, canine concierge services, dog bowls and mats, and dog-walking. It’s good news if you want to bring your pooch, but it’ll cost you: The add-on fee is $50-$175 per night, depending on the property.

Plaza sports book: The oldest continuously operating sports book in Las Vegas, running since it was the first to be housed in a casino in 1975, has been completely remodeled. The new book boasts downtown’s biggest seamless high-definition video wall: 5 feet tall by 16-1/2 feet wide, with a viewing area of more than 80 square feet. It will likely hold that “biggest” distinction until Circa’s monster book goes live across the street late next year.
