New parking fees at Makena
Visitors and commercial vehicles will have to pay for parking at Makena State Park beginning the first week of January. Hawaii residents with valid ID will be exempt from the charges, according to the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of State Parks.
Nonresidents will pay $5 while commercial vehicles will pay $10 to $40 depending on the number of passengers the vehicle can carry. Three electronic pay stations are being installed, and visitors can pay only by credit card, either at the pay station or by phone.
Parking at the three Makena lots will continue to be on a first-come, first-served basis, with a “roaming ambassador” monitoring parking and assisting visitors.

No parking will be permitted on roadway shoulders during pavement preservation work this week on Paani Place in Spreckelsville, from Nonohe Place to the Maui Country Club, the Department of Public Works announced.
Motorists are asked to park outside designated work areas from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and residents are asked to shut off roadside irrigation systems and reschedule home appointments that might require direct vehicle access.
No direct access to driveways will be permitted during work in affected areas, but country club access will be allowed.
