The expenditure of the $42.7 million on the repair of the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium would serve as a declaration of war against Honolulu taxpayers (“Natatorium needs cost-effective plan,” Star-Advertiser, Our View, Nov. 12).
The Natatorium swimming pool has been deprived of maintenance for the past 40 years. Consistent with the city’s lack of maintenance on other major assets, the money spent on repairing the Pacific Ocean saltwater-filled swimming pool, immediately adjacent to the ocean, makes as little sense as constructing a sauna in the middle of the Sahara Desert.
