Assistant Secretary of Defense Carter L. Burgess, left, and Senate nominee Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, a brigadier general in the Army Reserve, talk with Navy sonarmen aboard the Carpenter, one of the Pacific Fleet’s newest antisubmarine destroyers, during their stay in the islands. Burgess just completed an extensive field trip in the Pacific. Thurmond was called into active Army service for this trip.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / JUNE 15, 1982

Schofield Barracks soldiers manned the cannons at Hamilton Field during a tattoo held to mark the 207th birthday of the Army. Each cannon was fired individually as each state flag was presented — this time-exposure image captures several of the discharges. The military tradition of holding tattoos goes back several centuries to when drums were used to signal soldiers that it was time to stop drinking and call it a night.

A close-up of the Ala Moana Building at 1441 Kapiolani Blvd, which has been called the town’s highest merry-go-round. Actually, the circular structure will house a revolving restaurant on the 23rd floor. The big building has changed the town’s skyline.

Ten boats like this sheet-metal outrigger canoe — made just for fun out of scrap material — will race in the Homemade Regatta tomorrow in Kapalama Canal between King Street and Dillingham Boulevard. Joe Martinez, left, and Arsenio Cantero Jr. will be among the Honolulu Community College students competing. All boats are homemade.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / APRIL 22, 1961

This famous Waikiki landmark — St. Augustine’s Catholic Church — soon will be razed, to be replaced in about a year by a larger and more modern concrete edifice. Mass has been celebrated for the final time in the 60-year-old wooden structure, and in the interim services will be held at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel. Pacific Construction Co. was awarded the contract to build the new $1 million church.

STARADVERTISER / MARCH 15, 1949

James E. Thomas, right, helped his wife make a cape out of pheasant feathers. Wearing it is Maydeen Fuller. The feathers were arranged according to the natural color scheme of the bird — green-gold on the shoulders, gray-gold around the arms and bronze-gray at the bottom. Each of the million-plus feathers was sewn in place with four stitches. The cape is the property of Mrs. Alice Kamokila Campbell.
