In the aftermath of a whistle-blower complaint that President Donald Trump abused the power of the presidency by trying to coerce a foreign leader to help dig up dirt on a political opponent, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that congressional Democrats will launch an impeachment inquiry against Trump.

Although the announcement is long overdue, it brought a sigh of relief to many democracy-loving Americans who have watched helplessly while Trump continues to dismember the guardrails of democracy (with the tacit approval of most Republicans) by subverting the rule of law, attacking the free press, obstructing justice, encouraging and welcoming foreign attacks on our electoral system, alienating our allies while embracing dictators, violating the emoluments clause, undermining our national security and blocking Congress’s ability to fulfill their constitutional oversight role.

Many Americans are risking their lives to protect and preserve our cherished democratic values. Let’s honor their sacrifices by getting rid of Trump.
