Waipahu brought the power, but ‘Iolani was a blur.
The Raiders scored four touchdowns in a span of 2 minutes, 58 seconds in the opening quarter and was never threatened in a 48-14 rout of Waipahu on Friday night at Aloha Stadium.
‘Iolani improved to 3-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings (5-1) to pull even with Damien, which lost to Leilehua on Friday. Waipahu is 2-4 overall, but the loss does not count in the Oahu Interscholastic Association standings, where the Marauders are still 2-1.
Alfred Failauga, Waipahu’s record-shattering running back, rushed for 298 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries but also fumbled twice in ‘Iolani territory. He had 228 yards on 30 carries by halftime.
Shayden Molina had a blocked punt, a sack and a fumble recovery for the Raiders, who often stacked the box with nine to 10 defenders.
“It all goes to the team and the game plan. Contain Alfred and make the quarterback beat us,” said Molina, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior who also plays basketball. “I think we did a good job today on that. Shout out to the coaches. They gave us the game plan and we executed it.”
Waipahu often lined up in a power-I with one or no wide receivers, but couldn’t punch through the goal line. Failauga’s second TD came with a minute left in the game.
‘Iolani’s flurry of points began with a 25-yard TD pass from Jonah Chong (192 yards, four TDs) to Wailoa Manuel with 6:08 to go in the first quarter.
Molina then blocked a Waipahu punt, setting up ‘Iolani at the Marauders’ 10-yard line. Sophomore running back Brody Logan Bantolina scored around left end on the next play and it was 13-0 with 4:24 to go in the first.
On its next series, Waipahu lost the ball on its second play. Wide receiver Solofa Setu fumbled and Isaac Ignacio recovered for ‘Iolani at the 1. Brock Hedani scored on a 1-yard run for a 20-point lead.
On Waipahu’s next play from scrimmage, blitzing defensive back Jedidiah Wataru batted a pass by Cody Marques, and lineman Lima Harbottle intercepted for the Raiders at the 11-yard line. Bantolina ran for his second TD on the next snap and it was 27-0 with 3:10 left in the first half.
