The Hawaii soccer team’s bid for a fourth straight shutout of an opponent came undone late in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., on Sunday afternoon.
UH was on the cusp of improving to 2-0 on its road trip thanks to McKenzie Moore’s goal late in the first half. The Rainbow Wahine (2-3-1) led most of the second until allowing an 88th-minute equalizer to North Dakota’s Ashley Ebeling on a missed clear.
Then, in the 104th minute of the second OT period, Mimi Eiden beat goalkeeper Lex Mata on a breakaway to complete the letdown. UND of the Summit League improved to 4-1-1.
“That deflated us a little bit, to be so close. We held the lead for most of the game,” UH coach Michele Nagamine said in a postgame phone interview. “It was just an off game for us. We’re going to regroup pretty well. I think (the players) are pretty disappointed because they know that’s a game that they could’ve won, and that they probably should’ve won. But we’re not making any excuses; we just didn’t have our best performance today.”
UH completes its road trip at South Dakota State (2-3) on Tuesday.
