Firefighters investigate cause of fire at Waialua shrimp farm
Honolulu firefighters contained an early morning brush and structure fire that damaged several agricultural sheds at a shrimp farm in Waialua.
Twelve units with more than 35 firefighters responded to the fire that broke out at a shrimp farm at 67-021 Waialua Beach Road located across from Waialua Elementary School at approximately 2:45 a.m. today. When they arrived, firefighters observed six sheds engulfed in flames and a brush fire.
Honolulu Battalion Chief Robert Thurston said the fire started as a brush fire and the flames spread to the sheds. “There was nobody occupying any of the facilities at the time they ignited.”
The blaze continued to grow to surrounding brush. “We have very dry brush right now so the brush fire was able to spread quickly,” Thurston said. “Our efforts were focused on stopping that because we do have residences that surround this area so we wanted to make sure we contained that quickly.”
Police had briefly shut down Waialua Beach Road between Cane Haul and Haleiwa roads while firefighters battled the blaze.
Firefighters fully contained the brush fire at about 4 a.m and brought the shed fires under control at 7:40 a.m.
