The writer of the letter, “Humane Society should adopt no-kill policy” (Star-Advertiser, Aug. 22), obviously loves animals, but not everybody is able, legally, financially or situationally, to adopt an animal no matter how wonderful that might be.
We are in an island state and nobody is going to catch a plane from the mainland to adopt an animal.
The only two alternatives for animals that cannot find loving homes are to spay them and set them loose in the wild or to euthanize them en masse. Both alternatives are terrible, but unless some billionaire donates enough money to triple or quadruple the size of the Hawaiian Humane Society, it is forced to do the best with what it has.
It’s a thankless job and it’s damned if it does and damned if it doesn’t.
