With the “Beat the School Jam” efforts set for Monday, there is one change that might be new to some commuters: raised crosswalks, placed strategically near schools. They are on Kalihi Street near Kalakaua Middle, Kalihi Kai Elementary and Farrington High; on Farrington Highway near Waianae High and the Makaha Surfside; and on Fort Weaver Road near Ilima Intermediate, Pohakea Elementary and Campbell High.

The bump is aimed to slow down drivers. Improved sightlines for pedestrians help, too.

Earthquake keeps Loihi top of mind

An active submarine volcano south of Kilauea volcano, about 19 miles off the southeast coast of Hawaii island, is not expected to emerge above sea level for at least 10,000 years. Meanwhile, though, the nearby seafloor’s occasional shaking reminds us of Loihi’s presence. U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported a magnitude 4.2 Thursday morning, 6 miles south of the summit of the Loihi Seamount.
